“I was raised in the church. From early on, I was taught about the sacrifice Jesus made for me, for us. My road hasn't been straight and I haven't been perfect, but I never forgot about how He loves. Without a present father growing up, I struggled to find examples of what a good father was supposed to be. When I became a father, I was initially motivated by not giving my children the experience I had. The older I get, the more I realize that motivation is fine, but it isn't enough. There are some things - wisdom and discernment - about parenting that can come from no other place than a relationship with God. I've never been around a group that enabled me to build a community like Highlight. Men, women, fathers, and mothers... all willing to share their real lives in hopes that God will strengthen yours. And while no one has all the answers, they've helped me draw closer to the One who does. He helps me become a better man. “Growing up without my father in my life, I vowed that my kids would never have to live that same life. Being a father isn’t just working and coming home. It’s way more than that. It’s being an example for your family, your kids, sometimes to other fathers, or just an example of what your daughter can expect from another man. Before stepping into HL, I didn’t know if I was really showing the best example of any of that. Now I can say I have had better examples of fathers around me to show me what that means. I’m not perfect and never will be, but with HL I’ve learned not all of us fathers are perfect, but as long as we keep trying and staying rooted in God, our families will follow that example. He will always make a way for everything to be great. He gave me the chance to be a father and I’m grateful that He has given me the community to be the best father I can be.” - Luis Claros . We had a blast preparing lunch for the families of the Early Head Start program at FSI for their Male Involvement event today! It’s truly an honor to serve and Highlight our City in every way we can and we can’t wait till our next opportunity to serve with them again!
